Ralph Caccavo
In 1954, at the age of 10, Ralph migrated with his family from Italy to Australia.
He opened one of the first Italian delicatessens and grocery stores in Hobart, Tasmania, when he was only 16 years old. Within 18 months he started a wholesale food service business, together with his two brothers. Two years later they had 60% of the wholesale food market in Hobart.
In 1982 he opened Ralph’s Super Seven, the first major supermarket in Hobart to operate 7 days a week. It became an iconic store in Tasmania.
In 1990 the Caccavo family purchased Statewide Garages Pty Ltd. Starting with the manufacture and construction of garages and carports, the business expanded as Statewide Constructions (Aust) Pty Ltd, building steel-framed modular and flatpack homes and warehouses.
In 1996, he started Ralph’s Tasmanian Seafood Pty Ltd, exporting live abalone to China.
Also in 1996, he established Olive Groves of Tasmania, planting the first of what is now more than 17,000 trees, with more being added. This company is now the largest olive grower in the State. The olives are gathered with the largest mechnical harvester in operation in Tasmania, and are processed in the company’s state-of-the-art Italian continuous pressing and bottling plant. The product has won several industry awards.
In 1997, due to the death of one of his brothers, Ralph Caccavo sold both the supermarket and wholesale businesses to a national chain.
In 2002, the Caccavo family established Island Markets, an indoor/outdoor market which includes the largest live and fresh seafood market in Tasmania.
